Grape Bud Analysis
Count bunches per bud.

Estimate relative bunch size.

Inform pruning decisions.

Reduce thinning costs.

Avoid surprises.

Investigate bud problems.

In grape bud analysis, our inspectors dissect buds under a microscope to count the tiny bunch primordia that will become next year's crop.  We also estimate the relative size of the primordia.

When we find high fruitfulness, our growers can safely minimize the number of spurs or canes they leave on the vines after pruning.  This reduces thinning costs in the spring.

When we find unusually low fruitfulness, our growers are forewarned to modify their pruning to add more bunches by leaving more or longer spurs and canes.

When vineyards suffer from low production, our analysis of unfruitful buds provides clues about the causes, which may stem from failed inflorescence, bud necrosis, or some kind of stress or disease.

In vineyards infested with bud mites, we count the percent of buds infested and the level of damage to the bunch primordia.
